04.27.04: DEMPSEY DENIES WEAVER, WINS 9th STRAIGHT
The Delaware Dempsey 8th grade baseball team's bats were cooled off by the weather and Panther lefthander Justin Elefrite on Tuesday, but managed to pull out a come-from-behind win at previously undefeated Hilliard Weaver, winning 3-2 and keeping their perfect season intact. The Dragons (9-0) found themselves trailing in the last inning 2-1 with two outs and nobody on base, and strung together 5 straight walks that forced in the tying and go ahead runs. Austin Nichols scored the tying run when Frank Eastman walked and Zack Nowland scored the winning run when Hobie Jurden walked. The inning ended with a pinch-hitter lining out to the pitcher. After Aric Nichols RBI ground out in the first scored the games first run, the Panthers scored in their half of the first on 2 walks, a passed ball and a groundout. The Panthers took the lead in the 3rd on a double by Adam
Ciamacco. But once again, it was the Dragon's defense that made the difference. With one out, Ciamacco was doubled off at second when a Panther lined out. In the 4th and pivotal inning, the Panthers loaded the bases and had nobody out after a leadoff walk, a bunt that the runner was called safe at second on the play, and another walk. Dempsey pitcher Austin Nichols then struck out the next 2 batters and got the last out on a ground out to second base. After the Dragons had taken the lead in the top of the last inning, Elefrite lead off the bottom of the last inning with a double, but was thrown out at 3rd base for the first out of the inning, when the next batter missed the bunt and Dragons 3rd baseman Frank Eastman made a good play on the throw. After the batter walked, Nichols then struck out the next 2 batters to clinch the win. Nichols allowed just 2 hits, 1 earned run, walked 6 and struck out 8 to pick up his third win of the season. The Dragons will host Lancaster on Thursday at Lincoln Field, starting at 5:00.

Nowland, and Hobie Jurden all added RBI singles. Frank Eastman added a triple. In game two, the Johnnies scored 2 runs in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Then, the Dragons offense exploded with 4 runs in the 3rd inning and 9 more runs in the 4th inning en-route to the 14-2 win.
